Flip the Script: Interview with Kevin Olmstead, MEd, RP

I enjoy working with adult survivors of childhood trauma on issues such as attachment and security, addiction, complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and interpersonal issues.

I primarily draw from  Psychodynamic and Humanistic theory,

and I have  advanced training in Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Emotion Focused Therapy.

I think one of my unique strengths is helping clients build insight to and understand the underlying themes that pervade multiple different areas of their life. One of my favourite therapeutic interventions is a Cognitive Behavioural Intervention called the Vertical Descent. In this technique we help clients build insight into their automatic thoughts, the underlying assumptions that those automatic thoughts are based off of, and then connect those to the core beliefs that they have developed in early life about themselves, the world, and others.

My philosophy of therapy hinges around building insight into the ways clients have learned to protect themselves or have to abandon themselves based on their past trauma and experiences. And from there, helping them to learn how to begin to reconnect with and reclaim their authenticity. And I can tell when it's working because when they are able to relinquish some of the old maybe negative coping strategies that they had to adopt early on and that they feel more aligned and in tune with themselves and their day to day life.

Outside of therapy, I enjoy cooking, traveling, and experiencing new things in different cultures. I enjoy sports such as skiing, soccer, and going to concerts.
